The OSO's own Imant Raminsh creates the first half of a huge finale to a stellar year of music. The OSO season began with a world premiere and ends with the premiere of this huge commissioned piece, Quaternity, A Cantata of Seasons. Written as a companion piece to the towering Beethoven Symphony No. 9, this is the first Canada Council commission received by Composer Raminsh.

Imagine the reaction of audiences when the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 was first performed in 1824. Today, we know what to expect, but are still astonished at its virtuosity. The notable mentions: The last complete symphony Beethoven composed ~ One of the best known works of the western repertoire ~ An icon and a forerunner of Romantic music ~ One of Beethoven's greatest masterpieces ~ The first example of a major composer using the human voice on the same level with instruments in a symphony ~ A work of grand scope that set the tone for the Romantic symphonic form ~ Now the basis of  "The Anthem of Europe" as arranged by Herbert von Karajan ~ "One of the highest achievements of man, alongside Hamlet and King Lear."

It has been over a decade since the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra has performed the majestic Symphony No. 9. A fitting climax to an extraordinary season of music!

Pre-concert talks...
One hour before each mainstage concert (except Christmas and The Andrew Lloyd Webber Experience) our Music Director and Conductor Rosemary Thomson will greet ticket holders with an in-depth discussion and Q&A session on each mainstage concert. Just plan on joining us in the theatre one hour before showtime, and enjoy and learn from this in-depth presentation on that evening's music, compositions, and composers.

Afterthoughts...
In every city, Rosemary invites the concert's guest artist/s to join her onstage post-concert with one or two musicians from the orchestra to share questions and thoughts with the audience.
