Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra
OKANAGAN SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA (OSYO)
The OSYO operates under the umbrella of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra (OSO). It is comprised of 80 youth aged 12-20-something from all parts of the Okanagan Valley.
Rosemary Thomson, the Music Director and Conductor of the OSO co-directs the orchestra alongside Dennis Colpitts.
Rehearsals are held weekly on Sundays from 2.30-5.00, September through May, in Kelowna. We perform two concert series on our own in addition to a side-by-side Series with the OSO. Workshops led my members of the OSO are frequently given.
In addition to performing, members may take part in the Composition Program, which is mentored by world-renowned composer Imant Ramish, founder of the OSYO.
Rosemary strives to find opportunities for the young musicians of the valley to get the chance to make music with the professional players of the OSO.
This season we had our annual Side by Side concert which will feature the 70 members of the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan in concert with the OSO in the fiery Spanish inspired music on our Espana programme. The OSYO has recently come under the umbrella of the OSO as a leading part of our Outreach and Education program. Co-conducted by Rosemary and Dennis Colpitts and mentored by professional players from the OSO, the OSYO provides a rigorous musical education to string, wind, brass and percussion players from throughout the valley.
In our 2012/13 season, the OSO presented the Okanagan Symphony Youth Chorus for the first time. This chorus was made up of highschool students from throughout the valley and performed on our Christmas show alongside baritone & narrator, Alan Corbishley under Rosemary Thomson's direction.
The Youth Symphony continues to perform with the OSO each year and join our musicians on stage to create an energetic sound that fills the theatre.
