WHAT’S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS CONCERT
- The Messa da Requiem is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass (Requiem) for four soloists, double choir and orchestra by Giuseppe Verdi. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired. The first performance, at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, marked the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death. The work was at one time called the Manzoni Requiem.
- The Requiem was reportedly performed approximately 16 times between 1943 and 1944 by prisoners in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (also known as Terezín) under the direction of Rafael Schächter. The performances were presented under the auspices of the Freizeitgestaltung, a cultural organization in the Ghetto.
- The text of the Requiem is sung in Latin by the Chorus. You can find the text and translations here.
- Nearly 700 soldiers from the Okanagan Valley area lost their lives during World War I. Click here to see their names, as provided by the Okanagan Military Museum.
