Symphony School Shows
General Information
The OSO presents a Symphony School Show annually in Kelowna, Penticton, and Vernon, traditionally the week before Spring Break. Tailored to elementary school students, six performances, two in each venue, are scheduled and are typically based on an overall theme, which showcases the orchestra.
The Symphony School Show content is recommended for students grades 1-7. The concerts run approximately 50 minutes with no intermission.
Classroom activities will also be made available to enhance your symphony experience through a published guide.
“I loved the music, especially when I closed my eyes. The drums looked like fireworks exploding when I heard them with my eyes closed.”
School Show 2025 – Fiddle Adventures – Overview
The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra’s 2025 School Show, Fiddle Adventures with guest artist Daniel Lapp and guest conductor Jeff Farragher, promises a fun and engaging experience for students from grades K to 7. Built upon fiddle, folk and dance music from across North America, Ireland and Scotland, the show puts a spotlight on the fiddle, but students will be introduced to all the instruments of the orchestra in a toe-tapping musical journey.
The program will include:
- Slavonic Dance No. 8 by Dvorak
- Stars on the Hill (trad.)
- Petit Concerto Pour Carignan by Gagnon
- Fishers’ Hornpipe (trad.)
- Yesterdays by Bill Coon
- Selections from Carignan Suite by Dijon
In Gagnon’s Petit Concerto Pour Carignan the fiddle and the violin have a “conversation,” demonstrating the difference between classical and fiddle styles of violin music.
In the traditional song Fisher’s Hornpipe, students will follow the melody as it is passed around from one section of the orchestra to the other.
Jazz music gets its turn, too, with Bill Coon’s Yesterdays providing Daniel Lapp a chance to show off his trumpet chops – he’s an accomplished trumpeter as well as a fiddler.
